Fawwaz T. Ulaby, Ph.D.
Member, ARISE Board of Trustees


Dr. Ulaby is of Syrian origin but has been living and working in the USA since graduation from the American University of Beirut where he obtained the B.S Degree in Physics. Dr. Ulaby then obtained his
M.S in electrical engineering in 1966 and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1968 both from the University of Texas, Austin, USA.

Dr. Ulaby held several positions in teaching and research. He was at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas USA from 1968 till 1984 where he held several high positions both in teaching and in conducting and managing research. He then moved to the University of Michigan where he held several positions in teaching and research and received many awards. Dr. Ulaby has been the Vice president for research since 1999.




Dr. Ulaby is the author of several books and over 600 publications in a number of internationally recognized scientific and engineering journals. He also received a large number of awards and recognitions from many international organizations. His fields or research cover Radar and other Microwave fields. He is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE)
 



Mohamed Mrayati , Ph.D.

Dr. Mrayati is of Syrian Nationality . he had his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, from the American University of Beirut (1968), Diplome d’Etude Approfondie (DEA) en Electronique, Université Scientifique et Medicale de Grenoble, et Ecole (ENSERG) France (1971), Doctorat d’Etat es-Sciene Physique, Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble, France (1976). He had been the Director of the Institute of Electronics Research at SSRC – Damascus until 1990 when he became the Director and Professor at the Higher Institute of Applied Science and Technology (HIAST) in Damascus (1990-1995).

Dr. Mrayati is presently the Regional Adviser on science and technology at the United Nations – ESCWA Beirut (1997 until present).

Dr. Mrayati is interested in establishing policies and strategies in Science and Technology; researching in mechanisms to link education, R&D with production and services activities. He is also interested in the role of Science & Technology in national economic development, technology transfer operations and knowledge based economy.

Dr. Mrayati performs numerous research activities in signal processing; information technology , Arabic language technology (speech and text); information safety & security, and standardization. Co-author of several published scientific books in the fields of signal processing, Arabic language processing, computers, and history of cryptology. Published more than 180 scientific articles in specialized refereed journals and in refereed scientific conferences, and Submited over 60 technical advisory reports since he joined UN- ESCWA. 
 



Mohamed  Shwehdi , Ph.D.

Dr. Shwehdi is originally from Libya and is now a citizen of the USA. He received the B.Sc. degree from University of Tripoli, Libya in 1972. He obtained the M. Sc. Degree from the University of Southern California and Ph.D. degree from Mississippi State University in 1975 and 1985 respectively all in electrical engineering.

Dr. Shwehdi was a consultant with A.B. Chance Company, Centralia, Missouri 1981-1987 and Power System Consultant with Flood Engineering, Jacksonville, Florida, 1989-1992.




Dr. Shwehdi held teaching positions at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Texas A & M University, University of Florida and Penn State University. At present he is associate professor with the King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), Dhahran Saudi Arabia. His research interest includes, power system analysis, Power Quality & Harmonics, analysis of over voltages on Power Systems. 

Dr. Shwehdi is active in the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE) both locally and nationally, and received a number of awards for his activities with IEEE. He is the IEEE Power Engineering Society Saudi Arabia chapter chairperson since 1999.
